A's Make History As Three Teammates Hit First Career HR In Same Game

Jun 25, 2017 12:53 AM

What was distinct about the home runs hit by Matt Olson, Jaycob Brugman and Franklin Barreto for the Athletics on Saturday, is that each was the first of the player's major league career.

They became the second trio of teammates in major league history to do that, and the other instance took place more than 100 years ago.

Elias Sports Bureau research shows that the Kansas City Packers of the Federal League (a league that competed with what we call the major leagues today) had three players -- Duke Kenworthy, Art Kruger and John Potts -- do this on April 26, 1914, against the Chicago Federals.

Jun 25, 2017 9:09 PM

On the day his No. 56 jersey was retired, former White Sox star Mark Buehrle spoke much like he pitched.

Which is to say quickly, efficiently and from the heart.

Before the White Sox's 10-2 loss to the Athletics at Guaranteed Rate Field on Saturday, Buehrle gave a four-plus-minute tribute to the organization with which he spent 12 of his 16 seasons and the fans who supported him.

"It's an amazing feeling," said the 38-year-old Buehrle, who was flanked by his wife, two children, mother and father at the 30-minute ceremony. "I really can't put it into words how I feel. ... It's a special day."

Marlins' Edinson Volquez No-Hits D-Backs

Jun 4, 2017 1:13 PM

Edinson Volquez threw the sixth no-hitter in Marlins history, facing the minimum 27 batters on Saturday and beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-0. Tied for the major league lead in losses when the game began, he struck out 10, and the two baserunners who reached on walks were erased by double plays.

He needed 98 pitches, the last of those striking out Chris Owings to complete the masterpiece.

"When I passed the seventh, I said, 'I'm going to go for it," Volquez said. "And I got it."

Albert Pujols Hits 600th Career Home Run

Jun 4, 2017 4:18 PM

Albert Pujols hit his 600th career homer Saturday night, delivering a grand slam to become the ninth player in major league history to reach the mark.

The Angels slugger connected in the fourth inning against the Twins' Ervin Santana, driving a high fly into the short left-field porch at Angel Stadium.

The milestone homer is the latest superlative in the 17-year career of Pujols, a 13th-round draft pick who became one of the greatest hitters of his generation.

The 37-year-old Pujols is the fourth-youngest player to hit 600 homers behind Alex Rodriguez, Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth. Pujols joins Barry Bonds and Aaron as the only players to hit 600 homers and 600 doubles.
